[Coffee Shop Star] The eye-catching siphon brewer! How to use it at home and tips for success

Thank you for your continued support!
This is the GOKUJO KABINASHI COFFEE (Premium Mold-Free Coffee) office.

Among coffee brewing methods, the siphon features beautiful equipment that looks almost like a scientific experiment.

The sight of water bubbling up in the flask and the coffee liquid moving up and down between the funnel (upper part) and the flask (lower part) has a very high entertainment value for onlookers, making it a favorite in many coffee shops.

This time, we will introduce the brewing procedure for a siphon and crucial tips that determine its taste.

Basic Siphon Brewing Recipe (for one mug)

Since the siphon utilizes steam pressure, stable heat source control greatly influences the taste.

【What to prepare】

  • Beans: 16g (medium grind)

  • Equipment: Funnel and flask, stable heat source such as an alcohol lamp, cloth filter, filter holder, bamboo stirrer

【Brewing Steps】

  1. Set the cloth filter in the filter holder.

  2. Pour 220g of hot water into the flask (lower part) and wipe off any moisture from the outside.

  3. Place the flask on the heat source and bring the water to a boil.

  4. Set the filter in the warmed funnel (upper part) and add the coffee beans (16g).

  5. Once the water boils and rises into the funnel due to steam pressure, firmly insert and set the funnel into the flask.

  6. Once all the water has risen, use a bamboo stirrer to stir several times until the coffee grounds are evenly distributed.

  7. Turn off the heat source and wait for the coffee liquid to completely fall into the flask (aim to complete within 1 minute).

The Secret to Coffee Shop Taste: "Heat and Stirring"

The two factors that most influence the taste in siphon brewing are:

  • Heat control: Stable steam pressure during boiling and maintaining the temperature during extraction are crucial.

  • Stirring: If extraction takes too long, off-flavors can develop. Therefore, evenly extracting components in a short time through stirring is key to a clear taste.

For those considering introduction: Points to note for home use

The siphon might be a somewhat high-barrier brewing device for home use due to its complex brewing process and the effort required for storing the cloth filter after use (it needs to be immersed in water and refrigerated).

However, its beautiful visual appeal and the unique clear taste achieved by passing the coffee through a cloth filter cannot be experienced with other devices. Please give it a try when you want to enjoy a special cup of coffee.
