Today's Story: "The Legend of Haji Omar"

The setting is Mocha, a port town in Yemen, Middle East. There lived a monk named Haji Omar.

Due to an incident that incurred the resentment of the people, Omar was banished to the harsh desert from the town of Mocha, with only water.

Unable to find food, Omar, suffering from hunger, discovered red-ripe berries in the desert.

He eagerly bit into them, but the berries were so bitter they were inedible. When he roasted them over a fire to remove the bitterness, they became hard and even more inedible.

Omar tried boiling the hardened berries to soften them, but the berries remained hard, and only the water turned murky brown.

Unable to bear the hunger, Omar, hoping to at least get some nutrients, drank the murky water...

He felt refreshed, and his strength quickly returned.

A few days later, the people who had banished him were astonished to find Omar, who they expected to have starved in the desert, still alive. It was later discovered that the "murky water" that saved Omar was coffee, and it is said to have become popular in the town of Mocha.
